You already know what an email with a curriculum vitae should look like. Now we will show you step by step how to highlight a message with a finished CV, cover letter, or job application to immediately make a good impression on the employer. Because sending a good CV is not enough – the recruiter has to open it yet!
How do I title my CV and cover letter?
In most cases, employers provide information on how to title an email with a CV in the advertisement. Be sure to follow these tips. Usually, it is required to provide the offer number and the name of the position to which the advertisement relates.
However, it is worth making your e-mail stand out additionally. Therefore, you can add a short note to the title, thanks to which you will gain an advantage over other candidates.
If you are sending an email with a CV without an advertisement, you can create your own title. It is definitely worth entering the name of the position or department that interests you. The title might look like this: “Sales Candidate, 5 Years Experience”.
What to write in the e-mail with the CV?
You should start the e-mail with a salutation, preferably “Dear” or “Madam”. If you do not know who will read your message, e.g. because you are sending an e-mail without announcement, enter “Dear Sirs”.
In the next line, write about what you are addressing to the employer, provide the name of the position you are interested in and the name of the company. If you are preparing an email with a CV without an advertisement, explain immediately why you are writing about a job to this company (similar to a general job application). You can also provide one or two facts that make you stand out, similar to the About Me section on your CV.
In the next paragraph, briefly describe your key strengths. that make you the perfect candidate. For this purpose, it is worth taking a look at the job offer and check what are the most important requirements of the employer. Write briefly about your work experience. Be specific – show off your greatest successes, numbers, and specialist skills. Explain why you would like to work for this company.
On the next line, provide information about how and what documents you attach to the message. This paragraph usually looks like this: “Attached I am sending my CV and cover letter.”
In the next paragraph, express your wish to meet in person or participate in an interview. End the message with the salutation “Sincerely” and with a signature. Also, add contact details – e-mail address and phone number.
How do I send my CV by e-mail to the employer? How do I add a CV and cover letter file?
First of all, remember to avoid one of the biggest mistakes candidates and send your CV email from a professional-looking email inbox. Your address should consist of a first name, last name, and a neutral domain. Alternatively, the surname itself or the first letter of the first name + surname is enough. In the options of the e-mail box, it is also worth setting the way of displaying the sender’s name to your first and last name.
Before sending an e-mail with your CV, check if you have added the attachments with the application documents. They should also have a professional-looking name, e.g., firstname_surname_CV.pdf or firstname_surname_list.pdf. It’s definitely best to choose PDF. As Tiffany Cruz from LinkedIn notes, such a CV format will ensure that your documents will be displayed correctly on almost any device. You can easily generate a professional resume in PDF.
Check carefully who you are sending your CV email to and be careful not to make a mistake when entering the recipient’s e-mail. If you are sending a CV message without an advertisement, it is best to address it to the head of the recruiting team, or if not, to the head of the department where you want to work or the president of the company.
Before sending the email, read the text of the message one last time and check that you haven’t forgotten anything. Did you fill in the recipient field and enter the message title by the guidelines in the announcement? Are there any typos in the email? Have you added all the attachments?
In the e-mail with your CV, you do not need to include the CV clause with consent to data processing. It is enough for this information to be included in the content of the CV.
